Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2
Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
All members of trinity work together to reveal things to you and teach you. Eyes of understanding—eyes of the heart, represents mind and inclinations. All of it is increasing hope and a longing for eternal glory.
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
The same power that raised Jesus, works in the believer, not just in our bodily resurrection later, but in new spiritual life NOW! Exceeding--surpassing, to excel, to pass. Working—energeis, operation, efficiency. Mighty power—strength of his might. The power that works in you is the full measure of the might of His power. Head—over all power in the world and certainly now in the Church. Fulness filleth—He is the one who has all things to fill all things, and He works in believers and is our certain authority!
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Quickened—made alive from being dead, same power that raised Christ. Power of the air—Satan has power too, as unbelievers you are captive to that power. Satan is the prince over these powers. Conversation—way of life, manner of living.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for [because of] his great love wherewith he loved us,5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus
Together—a joining in with Christ. Our raising up assumes a previous raising up in Christ, without which, we are not raised up with Him. We are already seated in heaven with Christ. Union with everything He did and is doing right now! Now and into the future.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
No fellowship—Not just not doing them, but no indulgence or excuse for them. Manifest light—we were dark, brought into light, made light to reprove dark.
Awake—a cry of “UP!” “Rouse thee!” A call to stir men to action. Christ is calling men to respond to His Gospel and wake up to new life. Circumspectly—strictly, exactly, accurately. Fools—not as unwise, those still tripping in the dark. Redeeming—buy up the time, own it, command it. There is new spiritual life and wisdom to work with, wake up to new life and live it!
