Scripture Reading: Mark 1:1-22
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
A tree of life—being righteous gives life-giving food to others.
Winneth—fetch, get, seize, take possession of.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
Fainted and scattered—refers to spiritual condition, tormented, worried, vexed. Labourers—people spiritually qualified to bring in harvest. God is the one who equips people to bring in harvest, so pray that He would equip and send them forth.
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Jesus’ answer—it’s not the time, nor is this relevant to what you need to do now. It still isn’t! Don’t worry about it. Do your job. This progression of Gospel-spread is exactly what Acts shows us happened.
Point was to bear witness about Christ—His works, teachings, death, and resurrection.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Not ashamed—implies this took courage, bringing the stumbling block and foolishness of the Gospel, the thing that judges everyone. Buck up and do it!
Our evangelism of our politicians, sports teams, movies and songs we like might be used against us! You talk about things you’re not ashamed of.
Gospel reveals God’s righteousness and wrath. There is a clearer and fuller revelation of righteousness through the ages.
Hold truth in unrighteousness—God revealed truth to people, but their insistence upon being unrighteous clouds the truth—rest of Romans 1 gives detail about that.
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Rich unto all—willing to give riches, prodigal. Receiving the riches requires calling upon Him, which requires faith, hearing, preaching, and being sent.
1) To be believed, the Gospel must be preached.
2) The Gospel being preached does not mean people will believe.
How beautiful—from Isaiah 52. Blooming, flourishing in the right season. Scripture is letting you know preaching will fail.
Point is not to convert them to your faith, the point is to witness about Christ, bring them to Christ, the way, the truth, and the life.
