Scripture Reading: Romans 6
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
Bite and devour—partisan hatred. Consumed—guaranteed everyone loses, mutual injury. --So love or being partisan, guess which one we do easiest?!
Galatians 5:16-18-- How are we going to love since our flesh has no interest?
This I say then, Walk in [by] the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the [no the] law.
Walk—habitual conduct. What is your rule of action? Flesh will always do flesh things, law can only work on flesh. Flesh won’t do it, law keeping in the flesh will result in partisan biting and devouring.
Flesh Spirit—Creation vs. Creator. Physical vs. spiritual. They don’t do the same thing and are opposed to and withstand each other.
Cannot do—not a fatalistic oh well I have to sin, but saying when you want to do good your flesh is opposed, when you want to do evil the Spirit is opposed.
Not under law—law was made for fleshly people, natural people doing natural things with natural things. We are now spiritual.
1 Timothy 1:9—Law was not made for a righteous man, with the Spirit I am a righteous man.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Works—business, employment, what it does
Manifest—openly revealed, not hard to see. Plain and undeniable. In other words, it’s not hard to tell if you’re walking in the flesh!
Tell you before—I warn you ahead of time, before the event, the judgment.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Fruit—an effect, result, the thing that comes from the Spirit. What the Spirit does.
No law—no law forbids them. No law asks for them—law forbids bad stuff, but doesn’t enforce doing good.
But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
against such there is no law.
--the law commands love but produces no means by which to do it, you become self-righteous, not loving.
People think not being under the law means you can do sin now, nothing is bad anymore. But the point is that the person with the Spirit does not need the law as a tutor and governor, we are mature sons with the Spirit. The Spirit doesn’t do things that are against the law, so why would we need a law?
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Law of Christ—love, serving, bearing burdens. The Royal Law. The Law of liberty.
Not being under the law doesn’t mean there is no obligation.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Law of the Spirit—spiritual law of 7:14. In Christ I’m free from law of sin and death—how my flesh responds to God’s law.
Spirit overpowers flesh’s response. Law no longer kills but gives life because I am now spiritually equipped to do it.
Righteousness of the law—righteous requirements. Fulfilled—filled up, crammed full, satisfied, executed. Walk Spirit—Spirit in conjunction with spiritual law does the righteousness of the law flesh won’t and can’t do.
