Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:1-23
--For by grace are you saved through faith--The just shall live by faith--We walk by faith, not by sight--Faith comes by hearing
--Faith is a most important thing, and faith comes by hearing, therefore, Christians should be excellent listeners!
Mark 8:14-21-- What does biblical hearing mean? Three things
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
Hearing means 1. understanding and 2. Remembering—holding on to it. Thayer’s to be mindful of, to remember, to call to mind to think of and feel for a person or thing, to hold in memory, keep in mind
Matthew 13:18-23—parable of the sower—all people heard it, only the one who brought forth fruit understood what was heard.
But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
3. Obedience. Faith also means doing what you were told. “The obedience of faith” Paul calls it twice in Romans.
When it comes to our relationships with others, when we hear are we understanding, remembering, and obeying?
Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
How can you do these things without listening understanding, remembering, and obeying? Distributing—sharing in needs as though they were your own. Condescend—to be carried off with, to go together with, being led away with lowly things or people; drawn into sympathy with them. letting the lowly lead you by the hand. Conceits—your own opinions, caution against high-mindedness to the estimate we form of our own mental character.
Things not to hear:
Proverbs 19:20-21—wise people listen well.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.
In you, your heart, resides all manner of weird. Listen to God and godly people and their instruction. Devices—plans, plottings, imaginations. Don’t listen to those!
Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach. 27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
Smite/reprove--Wise people just need a word of correction; fools need physical punishment. Avoid whatever leads you from truth.
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knows that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
There are many words you should forget you heard. Don’t take all words seriously, lighten up, let some stuff go. Understand we are all sinners.
