Scripture Reading: Psalm 40

Psalm 32:10-11

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Sorrows—anguish, affliction, wickedness leads to misery. Mercy—chesed—kindness will surround. Glad—brighten, gleam. Happiness is found in the Lord, in holiness.

Psalm 31:7-8

I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

Considered—observe, see. Known—to see also may imply care, concern. Shut me up—abandon, deliver over to. Rather than confined, set free to roam.

Psalm 40:13-17

Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Deliver—snatch away, rescue. Love salvation—delight in its benefits and deliverance. Poor—afflicted, humble, wretched. Needy—in want, oppressed, destitute, lowest class.

Thinketh—root--to weave, be interwoven with you. Count, consider, meditate, his miserable state is occupies God’s heart.

Matthew 5:10-12

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Righteousness sake—because of doing righteousness, for these beatitudes. When unrighteous people see people do righteousness, they get mad because now they know it’s possible and they know they aren’t doing it. Rejoice—in your clear conscience. Exceeding glad—leap for joy. Revile—Abuse you to your face. Mock, deride.

reasons for rejoicing: Numbered with prophets and great reward.

1 Peter 4:12-14

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Rejoice—full of cheer, calmly happy. Glad with exceeding joy—not until His coming. IF we suffer now, we rejoice then. Name of Christ—for representing Him, being like Him.

Resteth—gives refreshment. Glorified--Suffering for Christ is one way we glorify Him here.

Reasons to rejoice: partaking with Christ, coming glory, spirit will refresh you.

Revelation 19:6-9

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Omnipotent—all-ruling, has all power. He wasn’t reigning before! Glad rejoice—exultant joy. Marriage—the bride, the church is finally united with her Husband, Christ. Righteousness of saints—the righteousnesses that they each did, not imputed justification thing. Blessed—how happy to be at that feast!

Reason to rejoice—life with Christ, great food!
