Scripture Reading: Isaiah 52
Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Inexcusable—without defense. Judge—condemn, damn, to censure wrong doing. Krino. Condemnest—katakrino, judges against. According to truth—from standpoint of righteousness, able to judge the heart. Escape judgment—your ability to condemn others does not take your sin away. Despise—think little or nothing of, disdain. Leadeth thee—designed to bring you to repentance.
--we judge each other, which condemns us because we all do the same stuff.
--God’s judgment is true, He is righteous, unlike us.
--God’s judgment has a way of escape.
--You can’t escape God’s judgment by judging others as worse than you! Use God’s means of escaping God’s judgment.
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
Perish—die, destroy. Judged—krino—condemn, damn, sentence. Written law doesn’t help at all, those without it are destroyed and those with it are judicially destroyed. Hearers—having the law does not save. Doers—law condemns.
By nature—without any outward rule. Work of the law—the substance of what the law said but not the revelation letter of the law, conduct consistent with the law. Conscience—inner sense of right and wrong that gets busy excusing or accusing your behavior.
Secrets—hidden motives, thoughts, and reasons are the true issue, not the fake externals, self-righteous hypocrisy.
According to my Gospel—as my Gospel preaching declares to you.
--The standard of judgment against Jews is written Law, standard against Gentiles in law in their hearts.
--But both are equally guilty before God’s standard.
--Simply being a Jew and hearing the law does not make you righteous.
--Gentiles already have the law, just in conscience form.
--Your conscience can justify or condemn you, but can’t save you.
--God’s judgment, based on truth, is coming.
Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
Sins against man to sins against God. Sacrilege—rob temples, no problem taking the fruits of idolatry, or could be to profane a holy thing, OT insistence not to take plunder from Gentiles but dedicate it to God, infamous instances where people did not do that and were judged. Dishonorest—despise, mistreat, insult, treat with contempt.
Circumcision—the sign did not save, supposed to be a reality of what the sign represented.
--Going back to original point of judging others and condemning yourself.
--Being religious, playing with the law, dishonors God if there’s nothing real behind it.
--One time law-keeping acts, followed by disobedience makes you worse than a Gentile cuz now you’re a hypocrite.
--God is looking for change brought about by Him, not external conformity.
