Scripture Reading: Colossians 3
Then learn to scorn the praise of men,
And learn to lose with God;
For Jesus won the world through shame,
And beckons thee His road.
--Jesus’ approach to evangelism was not to get people to agree with facts of the Gospel, but was to give them new life. Paul—I labor until Christ be formed in you.
--Count the cost—it’s going to cost you something, you will lose something.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Save—deliver, protect, preserve, keep safe and sound, Lose—destroy, perish, abolish, render useless. Verse 36 lose—damage or injure. You may not be ashamed of Christ, but are you ashamed of His gospel or anything He says?
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.20 But ye have not so learned Christ;21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
Vanity—perverse, useless, devoid of truth. Since they can’t find a cure, they go for it totally. But if you know Christ, you can’t act that way. Lack of knowledge is due to hardness of heart. Fear of God is beginning of wisdom. With greediness—a reckless delight in sin.
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Old man—old way of life given over to fleshly lust that deceive you—they promise a joy they cannot deliver. Let your new spiritual nature renovate and reform your mind. New creation is a one-time deal; letting that new creation reform your behavior is ongoing.
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:7 In the which ye also walked some time[once], when ye lived in them.8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Mortify—make a corpse of, kill off. Therefore—since you are dead in Christ Colossians 3:3. Which are on earth—and where they find their sustenance. Have put off—wholly renounced, disarmed, denotes separation from what is put off.
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
We learn this new way of life from Him who created us. Love holds everything together and results in perfect behavior. Since we’re dead to old man, members are killed off, we don’t judge people on physical things anymore.
