Scripture Reading: John 17

2 Corinthians 6:4-7

But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;6 By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

Armor of God and word of truth equip Paul to keep going as a minister of Christ amidst tribulation.

John 17:16-17

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Ephesians 1:13

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

James 1:18

Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Word is truth. Has power to sanctify—set us apart for God’s use, separate from the world. Power to save. Ability to make you approved unto God. Power to rebirth us.

--Word is truth, truth hurts. God’s word is a sword. Do we bludgeon people with the truth?

What is greater, truth or love?

1 Corinthians 13:1-2

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Love is greater than knowledge and wisdom and revelation. Love is greater than faith, and faith comes by hearing God’s Word!

1 Corinthians 13:6

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

You can’t actually split the two! They go together. Lying is not loving.

2 Corinthians 6:6-7: by love unfeigned,7 By the word of truth

Ephesians 4:11-16

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Point of church is to build people up into a unified knowledge of Christ. If the church does not teach, then people will be caught in deception, what satan and his minions do.

Edification happens by speaking the truth in love—“speaking” is not there. Might be more holding or following the truth, being or walking in the truth. “Truth in word and act, love in manner and spirit, are the Christian’s rule”

If we are not doing truth, it makes no difference if we speak it! Truth and love go together. Being true in love.
