Scripture Reading: Galatians 3:7-29

Romans 10:1-3—Gentiles attained to righteousness, Jews didn’t—Faith and works of law

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Heart desire—satisfaction, wish, delight. Be saved—implies they aren’t but could be, keeps hope alive that they are completely reprobate, there’s still a chance!

Today we have knowledge without zeal.

Own righteousness—they rejected God’s method of being made righteous—through Christ—and developed their own attempted method.

Romans 10:4-5

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

End of law—purpose, goal, law was schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. This is God’s method of justification—faith in Christ. Don’t need prong collar anymore.

Moses—only other method is to perfectly keep the law your whole life; hasn’t happened and won’t happen. You need another way, which is why God made one through Christ.

Romans 10:6-10

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Nothing needs to be done by anyone, everything for justification has been done, believe it! Justification is by faith, not by the law. Believe and confess; heart and mouth.

Raised from dead—resurrection is big deal.

Romans 10:11-13

For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Quotes Isaiah 28:16. Difference—distinction—all are justified the same way. Call—make an appeal to. Rich—wealthy, abundant possessions, exuberant giving. Quotes Joel 2:32.

Romans 10:14-15

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

In order to call on Him, you must believe, which means you need to hear, which means you need to be told. How can it be wrong to preach to Gentiles?

Beautiful—fully developed, blooming, swift and vigorous, flourishing, timely.

Romans 10:16-17

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Obeyed—to hearken to, to obediently listen. Report—literally means the thing heard. In other words, just because you tell them doesn’t mean they’ll believe. Scripture is preparing you for that result. Doesn’t mean they didn’t hear it!

Our job is to tell people the word of God. Their job is to obey it and hear it. The process can fall apart on two levels! Both are accountable.

Romans 10:18-21

But I say, Have they [Jew and Gentile] not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me [Gentiles].21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

Back to Romans 2—no excuse to not get it. All have heard—The Gospel is world-wide, people just aren’t hearing what was proclaimed. Jew and Gentile know it. Israel was told that Gentiles would hear it. Gentiles were largely ignored; now they are primary. This ticks off Israel, they thought they were it because they alone had the law. But that’s not the means. But they hardened themselves so no matter what God told them they refused to hear it.

No people—disrespectful title of Gentiles. Foolish—ignorant, out worshipping sticks and stones. Israel had advantages yet threw them away yet continued to reach out to them to hear while those living in ignorance got it!
