Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2
2 Timothy 2:14-16
Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
Strive not—war of words, has no profit. Subverting—overturn, demolish. Study—be earnest, diligent, make effort, use speed. Shew—present, appear. Workman—laborer, one who does. Dividing—cut straight, make a straight and smooth course—could refer to dispensing the word or to not depart out of the right way, to treat truthfully. Shun—stand above, separate from. Babblings—loud, fruitless discussion. Increase—to cut a way forward, advance.
--Not using the Bible correctly leads to ungodliness. People would rather listen to false teaching than be godly.
John 8:30-32—Just spoke about His death and doing His Father’s will
As he spake these words, many believed on him.31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Jesus has no interest in brief expressions of belief, but rather in a continuation of belief. Continue—stay, abide, dwell. Continuing in the truth lets you experientially know the truth, which will then set you free.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
Word makes free is same as Jesus making you free. Abraham’s seed by birth, but not spiritually. Abraham is not their true father, so certainly God the Father is not either. Hath no place in you—is making no progress in you.
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
There is no family resemblance in action! They do not act like Abraham. They claimed God as their father, but they don’t act like God, so He can’t be.
-- They claimed religious, political, and moral freedom. Christ grants all of these.
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Because God is not their Father, they can’t hear or obey His Word. Devil does not dwell in truth, nor do they. They will kill Christ because their father is a murderer.
Christ bases His judgment on what they do, not what they say.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
Christ’s actions were consistent with His true words, they could find no sin, but they did not listen to Him because they are not of God.
John 8:59--Then took they up stones to cast at him
If you don’t obey His Word, then God is not your father and you hate His Son.
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Faith isn’t just hearing, but doing what you hear. If you don’t do what God says, don’t expect to stand after a storm—The testing of the faith--Temptation, trial, persecution, etc.
