Scripture Reading: John 3:1-21
Romans 8:1-2—7:25—“I thank God through Jesus Christ” for this:
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, [who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit].2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Condemnation—damning sentence or verdict. Law of the Spirit—spiritual law of 7:14. In Christ I’m free from law of sin and death—how my flesh responds to God’s law.
Spirit overpowers flesh’s response. Law no longer kills but gives life because I am now spiritually equipped to do it.
--Links back to 7:10—law that was ordained to life I found to be unto death.
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for [about sin, on the business of] sin, condemned sin in the flesh:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Weak through flesh—incapable of conquering our sin nature.
Condemned sin—sentenced sin to destruction, not believers! Law stirred it up, made sin come alive. No longer has complete power over flesh. Can’t exercise its old sway any more.
Righteousness of the law—righteous requirements. Fulfilled—filled up, crammed full, satisfied, executed. Walk Spirit—Spirit in conjunction with spiritual law does the righteousness of the law flesh won’t and can’t do.
--why couldn’t God just forgive sin? God did but also did enough to conquer sin in us in the future too, to keep us from sin!
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Do mind—give attention to, thoughts and affections fixed on. Thinking by the flesh brings death—sin. Thinking by the Spirit brings life and peace—quietness, rest, tranquility.
--Thinking on fleshly things will led to fleshly things. Whatsoever is good, pure, etc.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Carnal mind—flesh mind does opposite of what God wants and leads to death. Not subject—not submissive, will not take orders from, military word.
In the flesh—under its sway and government. Cannot please—no desire nor ability to please God.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
In the Spirit—under His government, His sway. Spirit of Christ—the Holy Spirit who will lead you to act like Christ. If that’s not there, then you’re not saved. Goes back to chapter 2 again—patient continuance in well doing gets eternal life.
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Body will lead you to death; Spirit will lead you to life. They will act in different ways because of their different stance to God’s law.
Quicken—enliven, Not only future resurrection, but the ability to lead your body to do living things now, different from what it did before when it served sin and death.
--God will not leave in the grace the body that His Spirit indwelt.
