Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 2
Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. 32 Remember Lot's wife.33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
No sin of Sodom is mentioned, only their obsession with materialistic life.
Ezekiel 16:49--Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
When God’s judgment comes, will you cling to earthly things? Lot’s wife looked back, her heart was still there.
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Cannot do anything—1) Lot’s presence kept God’s judgment away. 2) God removes His people before judging. God was limited by man!
Genesis 19:17—God told them not to look back.
Luke 9:62-- No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
2 Peter 2:6-10
And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
Ungodly—opposite of godliness is worldliness. Vexed—tormented, tortured, distressed. Righteous people will not go through God’s judgment. Presumptuous—daring and audacious. Dignities—angels? Lot treated the angels well. People of Sodom did not.
Can you leave all the world’s stuff for God?
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Miracles—wanting to see physical displays of power. Dwell on the earth—those living in the sphere of physical things will be deceived by physical things.
Image—tendency of us to worship idols, physical things—covetousness sets you up for idolatry. Mark--brand.
Buy and sell—our means of staying alive must be dropped.
