Scripture Reading: Luke 2:1-19

Matthew 1:18-20

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the [an] angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Espoused—engaged, quite serious in that day, almost like being married. Put away—divorce, do it quietly for her sake. Just—holy, righteous. Son of David—this is what the line of David has been waiting for, points his mind to prophecy.

Matthew 1:21-23

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Jesus—Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, or Jeshua, or even Hosea. Means Jehovah is salvation, basically means “savior.”

What does He save us from? Our sins.

God came to be with us to save us from our sins.

Call—the idea being that He will be this, He will fulfill that title. Savior. God with us. They will recognize Him as being such.

Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Colossians 1:14-17

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:16 For [because] by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Image—exact likeness, perfect representative. He is the human visible image of the Father. If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.

First begotten--That is, begotten before every creature; subsisting before all worlds, before all time, from all eternity.

By Him—He was the instrumental agent of Creation, He did it.

For Him—He is the end of all things, He is the reason creation is at all.

He IS before all things, not He was. He was eternal before anything was a thing!

Consist—He continues to hold all things together.

He who created all things shed His blood that we might be saved.

1 Timothy 1:12-15—From a universal level to the individual level

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Worthy of acceptation—to be fully received and embraced by all that we are.

Came into the world—implies pre-existence.

Chief—first, foremost. Proper spiritual view is that your sins are greater than anyone else’s. Esteem others better than yourself.

The son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10
