No audio this week. The recorder ran out of batteries after a couple minutes. Coincidental since the point of the sermon was: listen to God; not people!

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4

Psalm 119:89

For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

God’s Word has characteristics of God and heaven. Pure, eternal, etc.

Settled—stands firm, as constant as heaven.

Psalm 119:111

Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

Heritage—possession, inheritance.

Psalm 119:142

Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

Psalm 119:144

The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.

Everlasting—the same in all ages and places. Does not fall apart, does not leave promises undone. Is not misleading you, will not let you down.

Psalm 119:152

Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

Of old—by long experience. Founded—established, grounded firmly.

Psalm 119:160

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

Is true—the whole of the revelation is true. Beginning—the sum total, all, everyone.

Isaiah 40:6-8

The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

The voice—Prophet, verse 3, make straight the way of the Lord—what God has promised will happen. He does not speak like powerless, temporal people.

--You can believe what people say, but their word dies with them, has no power with God. Our job is to hear God, His eternal word. What you believe doesn’t matter; what He says does.

1 Peter 1:18-21

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Redeem—buy out of slavery—in bondage to empty way of life following human rules.

Conversation—manner of life. Received by tradition—handed down from your fathers. Human piety, obeying rules of people who die. Before world—everlasting, eternal plan. There is no other. Your father’s idea wasn’t around before the world!

1 Peter 1:22-23

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Obeying—submission, compliance, observing the requirements.

The Word—is the means or instrument that brings people to salvation. Lives and abides—the word is the power of God. The living word.

--Parable of the sower—the Word is the seed thrown out there.

1 Peter 1:24-25

For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
