Scripture Reading: Genesis 22:1-18
Galatians 3:1—law is not our thing, faith is, don’t be foolish and slip back
O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Foolish—unintelligent. Not thinking. Shallow, frivolous. Bewitched—put a spell on. Fascinate. Coda with two sticks. Before whose eyes—against your own eyes.
You know Christ was crucified and you were crucified with him, why are you now acting as though none of that is true?
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect [completed] by the flesh?4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Works and hearing—external, walk by sight, or by faith.
Suffered—they dropped the law and got pounded by Jews, if you go back to the law, you remove any benefit of that suffering. You are listening to those who persecuted you!
--When you drop the external, your group will pound you. If you go back, you gain nothing from the pounding.
salvation does not come from external works, neither does spiritual growth/benefit. --Works of law is doing external things to impress others, there is nothing spiritual/ faith about that.
--Mosaic Law was their external hangup:
Galatians 3:6-9—faith has always been the thing, it was here before the law
Galatians 3:10-14—if you want to use law, then you use the whole thing, which then means you’re cursed—exposed to God’s vengeance, condemned to punishment. External laws don’t result in dealing with God. You’re still stuck!
Galatians 3:15-20—Faith and promise were in effect before the law, law changed nothing. Stop making the law everything! Faith and promise are everything, that’s what was here first.
Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Law doesn’t give life; law concludes you to be a sinner.
Give life—impart spiritual life that changes disposition from sin to righteousness.
The Scripture—wherein is written the law of Moses, their law of choice.
Concluded—shut in, kept imprisoned. Righteousness is by promise, received by faith. Law won’t do it; Gospel promise does.
Before Faith came—before Jesus Christ was presented as crucified before their eyes. The enacted promise.
--Law was a temporary guardian to get us to Christ. Given to hold them until the Gospel was revealed.
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Schoolmaster—a household slave entrusted with care of the kid who was not let out of the house without their permission. A legal guardian of a minor.
--Law given to reveal how we fall short, plus sacrifices to show we need help from another life. The curse of the law—death.
--Law not given to save, so what was it here for? The failings of the flesh, the condemnation that results from putting on a show you can’t maintain, drives you to the end of you and to Christ.
Faith is come. The Gospel is here. Law could get you to the border—Moses—but a Joshua/Jesus is required to get you into the Promised Land.
--So if we’re not under law anymore, why go back? Why use the lesser when you have the greater, especially when the lesser pointed out you needed the greater?!
--if you have a driver’s license, why go back to biking? Biking was there to teach you road rules but wasn’t as helpful. Don’t go back to that.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Children—son of full age, no longer under a guardian.
Baptized into Christ—at union with Christ, Put on Christ—clothed in Him.
Jesus Christ is the full Son of God, you are in Him, complete as a son, so don’t go back under guardianship. Our identity is in Christ, not external distinctions.
