Scripture Reading: Galatians 3:22-4:11

Romans 8:16

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God

Children—points to rebirth. A clear conscience and assurance that God is our Father. What does being God’s son look like? CHRIST!

What is the witness of the Spirit? A feeling? Is it because you think you’re saved?

Romans 8:13-15

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Either kill off the deeds of the body now, or die with the body later. Mortify—reduce to a position of deadness or atrophy the practices stemming from fleshly lust. Where does the Spirit lead? To holiness and righteousness. Not some kind of dreamy land, but to practical sanctification.

Abba Father—Abba is the Syrian word for father. It was not a childish expression comparable with ‘Daddy’: it was a more solemn, responsible, adult address to a Father.” Perhaps the unlearned and learned terms.

Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Suffering with Christ—not any suffering, but suffering consistent with Christ’s, for righteousness sake. Joint-heirs with Christ—if he suffered; we will suffer. If He is glorified; we will be glorified. Does your faith cost you anything? Lead to persecution? Then you can know pretty well you’re saved!

Galatians 5:16-18

This I say then, Walk in [by] the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Walk in—habitual conduct, way of life. Fulfill—not that we won’t have sinful cravings, but that we don’t fulfill them.

Cannot do—while both are contending you can’t do either one. Figure out which desire belongs to which and do the Spirit one. This is not inevitable failure because he just said to walk in the Spirit, which means it’s possible!

The Law will not defeat your flesh, it will stir it up. The Spirit, however, gives freedom and liberty and victory over sin.

IF we follow the spirit we don’t need the law—whoohoo! NO rules! I can do whatever I want!

Galatians 5:19-21

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

What does the flesh want to do? Lasciviousness—shameless license and excess.

Variance—quarreling and fighting. Emulation—jealousy Strife—party spirit, a partisan desire to promote selfish interests.

Last week Jesus said to get into the kingdom, to be an inheritor, we needed to be born again. To be born again means to be have the Spirit, when we walk in the Spirit we don’t do fleshly things.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Fruit—all one. Demonstrated by inner emotions, character toward people, and character toward God. The reason you are not under the law is because you aren’t doing anything in the Spirit that the law has a problem with!

Galatians 5:24-25

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Have crucified—the old man is dead, reckon it to be so, Mortify it, treat it as the dead power that it is in Christ. It is dead in fact; now it is time to realize itprctically. Walk—march in line. Be in step with.

Walking in the Spirit is a choice.
