Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:105-136
Psalm 119:105--Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:130--The entrance [opening/unfolding] of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved [tell a fault resulting in shame]. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
The degree to which you do what is right, is the degree to which you come to the light. Doeth truth—as a practice. One main reason to come to God’s Word is to find out what to do and let those deeds shine.
Since we know we are sinners, we refuse to hear God’s Word. We replace it with something that makes us feel like we’re getting God’s word. We teach for doctrine the commandments of men. We end up wanting lying teachers:
For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.8 Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:11 Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
Egypt won’t help, don’t go there, just listen to God. Israel didn’t listen, they went to Egypt for help and want someone to tell them their disobedience will work out well. Sinners can’t stand to be before a Holy God.
Fear ye not me? says the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?23But this people hath a revolting and rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.24Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, that gives rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserves unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you
Little grains of sand control the roaring ocean better than this people is controlled by God Himself. Even under judgment they continue their own way.
For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
They set snares to trap men, not fishers of men either, but to destroy them! Houses full of deceit—their deceitful work has led to their prosperity.
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
Prophets give a false message, priests go along with it, and the people love the whole system. How will this help when you have to stand before God?
2 Timothy 4:1-4
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
God is coming to judge, so what should we do? Preach the word! Instant—stand, at hand, ready to go, assault. Season—at every moment. In and out—whether people want to hear it or not! They--professed Christians. Own lusts—the desire for sin will keep them from hearing the word and will instead make them want to hear lies, what they want to hear to continue to live in sin.
--No one wants the truth—men love darkness and not the light.
