1 Corinthians 10:1-4—Israel’s wilderness wanderings were a physical type of the spiritual reality of life on earth heading toward heaven. How salvation happens, etc. But their rebellion became the larger point, what we can learn from their failure.

1 Corinthians 10:5-6

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

All Israel went together through the spiritual journey, a shadow or picture of spiritual journey in Christ. Many did not please God and were judged. This all happened for our example. Dead people can’t learn!

Our examples—types of us

1 Corinthians 10:7-11

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Tempt Christ—test thoroughly, to the utmost, so as to wear out, by wanting things backin Egypt, but us wanting stuff Christ has freed us from. Admonition—rebuke, warning, call attention to. Murmur—against Moses; Corinth against Paul.

We need to avoid the example of Israel—walking in spiritual company does not mean the unrighteous get a pass! They messed with Christ! Written for our instruction.

1 Corinthians 10:12-14

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Thinketh—suppose, be of the opinion, seem. Heed—look, watch out!

Common to man—Israel already went through it. Don’t assume you won’t! Israel could have made it, God is faithful to help, people get arrogant, don’t think they need God, and fall.

This does not mean God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. sin can be escaped. Sin is not inevitable. Humility is a defense. Israel got arrogant, “we’re God’s people” and they were judged

Idolatry—which is covetousness in our age according to Ephesians 5:5; Colossians 3:5

Matthew 23:29-31

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
